Sedation dentistry allows patients to receive dental care in a calm and comfortable way. Whether the procedure involves IV sedation, nitrous oxide, or general anesthesia, the goal is to make the experience relaxed and stress-free. Here are five simple ways to get ready for your appointment.

Review Your Medications
Before any sedated dental treatment, it is important to review all medications and supplements with your oral surgeon. Some can interact with anesthesia or affect recovery. If you take daily medication, ask Dr. Robert Barron for clear instructions before your procedure. Do not stop or change any medication unless advised by your doctor.
Be sure to also mention if you use cannabis, CBD, or edibles, as these substances can influence how your body responds to sedation. Your care team needs this information to plan your anesthesia safely and adjust dosages if needed.
If you are feeling unwell before surgery, such as having a cold, sore throat, or stomach upset, let the office know. Rescheduling may be best to keep your procedure safe.
Follow Fasting Instructions
Do not eat anything for eight hours before your surgery. You may drink clear liquids in small quantities up to 2 hours before the procedure. This helps prevent nausea and other complications during sedation.
If you smoke, try to quit ahead of time. At the very least, avoid smoking a minimum of 12 hours before your appointment. Smoking reduces oxygen levels and slows healing after treatment.
Arrange a Ride Home
You will need a responsible adult to bring you to your appointment, wait during the procedure, and drive you home afterward. Sedation can make you feel tired or lightheaded for several hours, even if you feel awake.
Avoid driving or operating any machinery for 24 hours after your appointment. Having someone with you makes recovery easier and safer.
Wear Comfortable Clothing
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows your care team to monitor you during the procedure. Wear loose sleeves that roll above your elbows and low-heeled shoes. Remove contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures before surgery. Avoid makeup, lipstick, and nail polish so your care team can monitor your oxygen levels during the procedure.
Plan to Rest
Set aside the rest of the day to rest. Keep your head slightly elevated, eat soft foods, and drink water once your surgeon says it is safe.
Do not smoke, drink alcohol, or do heavy activity for 24 hours. Taking it easy helps your body heal faster and keeps you comfortable as the sedation wears off.

FAQs
What procedures are done under sedation?
Sedation can be used for many oral surgery treatments, including wisdom teeth removal, dental implant placement, bone grafting, and other surgical procedures. It is also helpful for patients with strong gag reflexes or dental anxiety who need complex dental care.
Can you feel pain under sedation?
Sedation dentistry keeps you relaxed and pain-free during treatment. Local anesthesia is also used to numb the surgical area, so you remain comfortable while the oral surgeon works.
What does it feel like to be sedated?
Most patients describe feeling calm, drowsy, and unaware of the procedure. Time passes quickly, and you may remember little or nothing once the sedation wears off. The team monitors you closely the entire time to ensure safety and comfort.
