Pregnancy changes how and when certain dental procedures are performed. If you are dealing with wisdom tooth pain, swelling, or infection while pregnant, timing and safety are the priority. Whether or not you should have them removed depends on your symptoms, what trimester you are in, and overall health.

Can You Get Your Wisdom Teeth Removed While Pregnant?

Wisdom teeth can be removed during pregnancy if there is a clear clinical reason. However, elective removal is usually postponed until after delivery.

If you have:

  • Severe pain
  • Active infection
  • Swelling affecting swallowing or breathing
  • Abscess formation
  • Uncontrolled inflammation

Removal may be necessary to protect both maternal and fetal health. If your wisdom teeth are not causing urgent symptoms, most oral surgeons recommend waiting until after pregnancy.

When Is The Safest Time During Pregnancy For Wisdom Teeth Removal?

The second trimester is generally considered the safest window for necessary dental procedures.

First Trimester

During the first trimester, the baby’s organs are developing. Elective procedures are avoided whenever possible. Emergency treatment can still be performed if infection is present because that is the safest option for mom and baby.

Second Trimester

This is the preferred time for non-elective treatment. The risk to fetal development is lower, and lying back in the dental chair is usually more comfortable than in later pregnancy.

Third Trimester

In the third trimester, prolonged procedures may be uncomfortable due to back pressure and circulation changes. Emergency treatment can still be completed if required.

In all cases, your oral surgeon will coordinate with your obstetrician if surgery is needed.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe During Pregnancy?

Dental X-rays are considered safe during pregnancy when proper shielding is used. Modern digital X-rays use very low radiation. A lead apron and thyroid collar protect both the abdomen and thyroid. Imaging is only taken if it is clinically necessary to diagnose infection or impaction.

Anesthesia And Sedation During Pregnancy

Local anesthesia is safe during pregnancy and is commonly used for dental treatment. It allows pain control without affecting awareness.

Sedation and general anesthesia are typically avoided unless absolutely necessary. If sedation is required, the type and dosage are carefully selected, and medical clearance may be requested.

FAQs

Can a wisdom tooth infection harm my baby?

Untreated infection can spread and cause systemic inflammation, which is more harmful than properly managed dental treatment.

Can I take antibiotics for a wisdom tooth infection while pregnant?

Treating a dental infection during pregnancy is important to prevent the infection from spreading. If antibiotics are needed, your provider will choose one with an established safety record in pregnancy and adjust the treatment plan based on your medical history and stage of pregnancy.

Should I wait until after pregnancy to remove my wisdom teeth?

If the teeth are not causing pain or infection, waiting is usually recommended. If infection or severe symptoms are present, removal may be necessary.
